It is strategically placed at the head of the Teign Estuary situated about four miles inland with strong maritime bonds with surrounding towns including Torbay and Teignmouth. Additionally, it is practically mid-way between Plymouth and Exeter. It was a minor port up until the twentieth century. Eight miles away is also the Dartmoor National Park.
